Jason & Stephanie's Vail Wedding Cakes

Wedding cake ideas, Colorado bakers that serve Vail, and gluten-free cupcakes. About 60 guests, indoor reception, cake budget under $2,000.

September 5, 2027 · Vail, Colorado

The short version

Four bakers publish prices that fit under $2,000 for about 60 guests: Mountain Flour, The Cake Maker, Afternoon Delight and Alire. All four list gluten-free options. The Cake Maker and Afternoon Delight also list cupcakes and ship tasting boxes, and Afternoon Delight has a review praising its gluten-free cupcakes. Coppelia and Megan Joy are lovely but above budget for Vail.

Most Colorado sources put custom wedding cake at roughly $6 to $15 per serving in the Denver area (VowLaunch) and $8 to $12 to start for fully custom cakes in Northern Colorado (The Cake Studio FoCo). At 60 guests, that is about $360 to $900 before delivery, so the budget leaves room for detail work and a separate gluten-free cupcake order.

Ten cake styles

Each style is tagged with its look. Sizes use Wilton's wedding-slice chart (1 x 2 in slices). Photos are real published examples, credited and linked under each image.

What it is
A thin, scraped coat of buttercream so the cake layers peek through, finished with fresh flowers, eucalyptus or berries.
Why it fits Vail in September
Feels like a mountain meadow in early fall; the florist can match blooms to your bouquets in golds, rust and cream.
Size for about 60
2 tiers, 8 in + 10 in (about 62 servings), or 3 tiers 6/8/10 in (about 74) if you want height.
Practical notes
Thin frosting dries out faster, so ask the baker to set it up close to reception time. Fresh flowers come from your florist and should be food-safe and removed before cutting.

What it is
Palette-knife buttercream shaped into jagged peaks around the tiers, shading from slate or soft gray up to snowy white tips.
Why it fits Vail in September
Literally the Gore Range on a cake; a white-on-white version reads as the first dusting of snow on the peaks.
Size for about 60
3 tiers, 6/8/10 in (about 74 servings) gives room for the ridgeline to wrap around.
Practical notes
All buttercream, so no fondant needed. Two Colorado bakers below show mountain designs (Coppelia, The Cake Maker).

What it is
One tier (or all) finished to look like white aspen bark, with dark knots and eye marks; sometimes with initials carved into a heart.
Why it fits Vail in September
Aspens are the signature tree of Vail in September. The Knot's example is from a fall wedding at a Vail resort.
Size for about 60
2 tiers, 8 + 10 in, with only the bottom tier in bark so it doesn't look busy.
Practical notes
Can be done in buttercream (softer look) or painted fondant (sharper detail). Pairs well with style 5 on the other tiers.

4Simple tiers on a wood-slice stand with pinecones

What it is
Clean or lightly textured buttercream tiers set on a log-round stand, with a few pinecones, sprigs or dried grasses.
Why it fits Vail in September
Low-key lodge feel that suits a Vail reception without much fuss, and it is one of the cheapest looks to execute.
Size for about 60
2 tiers, 8 + 10 in. Ask whether the baker rents a wood stand or if the planner sources one.
Practical notes
Real pinecones and branches should be cleaned and kept off the frosting (on the stand, or with a barrier).

5Gold aspen-leaf accents on white

What it is
A smooth white cake with a cascade of sugar aspen leaves in gold and soft yellow, sometimes brushed with edible gold.
Why it fits Vail in September
Captures the exact week the aspens turn; elegant enough for a formal reception but still clearly 'Vail in September'.
Size for about 60
3 tiers, 6/8/10 in (about 74 servings) so the leaf cascade has room to flow.
Practical notes
Sugar leaves are handmade, so expect a higher per-slice price than plain buttercream. Fondant gives the crispest base for them.

6Classic white tiers with sugar flowers

What it is
Traditional smooth white tiers with a few handmade sugar flowers (roses, ranunculus, or seasonal blooms).
Why it fits Vail in September
Timeless and photographs well against mountain views; sugar flowers can be tinted to fall tones and kept as a keepsake.
Size for about 60
3 tiers, 6/8/10 in, or 2 tiers 8 + 10 in for a lower cost.
Practical notes
Sugar flowers cost more than fresh flowers but don't wilt and need no florist coordination.

What it is
White or ivory cake dressed with deep burgundy and plum blooms, figs, blackberries and a little greenery.
Why it fits Vail in September
Rich early-autumn palette that pairs with an evening reception and warm candlelight indoors.
Size for about 60
2 or 3 tiers; fruit and flowers usually cluster on one side so a 2-tier 8 + 10 in works well.
Practical notes
Fresh fruit is added on the day; ask the baker who sources and places it. Some bakers charge extra per serving for fresh fruit.

What it is
White tiers with sprigs of pine or fir, pinecones (sometimes gilded), and a sparkle of sanding sugar like fresh snow.
Why it fits Vail in September
Nods to the chance of an early-September dusting on the peaks; works year-round in the mountains.
Size for about 60
3 tiers, 6/8/10 in; greenery spirals up the tiers.
Practical notes
Real pine is not food-safe on its own; ask for sugar or wafer-paper greenery, or a barrier under real sprigs.

What it is
Smooth or softly combed white buttercream, clean tier lines, and one restrained detail (a single sprig, pearls, or a thin ribbon).
Why it fits Vail in September
Quiet and modern; lets the venue and mountain views be the decor, and evokes fresh snow without being literal.
Size for about 60
2 tiers, 8 + 10 in (about 62 servings), or a tall 3-tier 6/8/10 in.
Practical notes
Usually the most budget-friendly style since detail work is minimal. Sharp edges are easier in fondant; ask about smooth buttercream.

What it is
Monochrome texture (stucco finish, vertical pleats or ridges) in ivory, oat or soft stone, with little else on it.
Why it fits Vail in September
Echoes rock and snow texture in a subtle way; one of The Knot's 2026 trends, so it reads current but not loud.
Size for about 60
2 tiers 8 + 10 in, or 3 tiers 6/8/10 in.
Practical notes
All buttercream. Megan Joy Cakes (Eagle) is known for organic, textured work, though she is above your budget.

Gluten-free cupcakes

Order the gluten-free cupcakes from the same baker as the cake if you can: one delivery, one contact, and matching decoration. Several of the bakers above list gluten-free options. If any guests have celiac disease, a dedicated gluten-free kitchen is safer.

Cross-contamination questions

Questions

Questions to ask cake bakers

  1. Is September 5, 2027 open, and how many weddings do you take that day?
  2. What is your per-slice price for our style, and what does it include (tasting, delivery, setup, stand, top tier)?
  3. Have you delivered to our venue before? What is the Vail delivery fee?
  4. Do you ship tasting boxes, and is the tasting fee credited to the order?
  5. Can you make the gluten-free cupcakes too, and how do you prevent cross-contact?
  6. Fresh or sugar flowers? If fresh, will you work with our florist?
  7. What are the deposit, cancellation, and final-count deadlines? Any inflation clause?
  8. Who actually decorates our cake?

Check with the planner

  • Venue cake policy: outside bakers allowed? Cutting, plating or service fee? (Example: Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse charges $6 per person.)
  • Delivery window, load-in access and where the cake table goes (away from windows, fireplaces, heat lamps).
  • Who handles the gluten-free cupcakes so they stay separate from the main cake.
  • I-70 timing for bakers driving in from out of the valley over Labor Day weekend.
